The wait is over! Anne Hathaway has officially announced that a third Princess Diaries movie is in development, delighting fans of the beloved franchise.
In a playful video shared on Instagram, Hathaway gave a nod to the earlier films, starting with a clip of herself holding up one finger to represent the first movie. The video then cut to a famous scene from the 2001 original where her character, Mia Thermopolis, discovers her royal heritage, exclaiming, “A princess? Shut up!”
Next, Hathaway held up two fingers, followed by a clip from the 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, where her co-star, Julie Andrews, repeats the iconic line, “Shut up!”
To fans’ excitement, the actress then raised three fingers, signaling the confirmation of the long-awaited third film. She concluded the video by blowing a kiss to the camera and sharing a screenshot of a news headline that confirmed Disney is working on The Princess Diaries 3 with director Adele Lim attached.
In her post, Hathaway wrote, “Miracles happen,” and added, “Back to Genovia,” referring to the fictional kingdom from the series.
Returning to Genovia
The Princess Diaries movies center on Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers she’s the heir to the throne of Genovia. The original film launched Hathaway into stardom and also featured Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother.
It hasn’t yet been confirmed if Andrews will return for the third installment, but fans are eagerly hoping to see the duo reunite on screen for the next chapter of Mia’s royal journey.
On top of this exciting news, Hathaway is also reported to be involved in a sequel to another beloved film. According to IMDb, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in pre-production, with Hathaway set to return alongside Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
Fans of both franchises are in for a treat as these much-loved characters prepare to return to the big screen.
